Giving Something Back: Lemoenland Pre-School Cedarberg African Travel, with the support of employees and clients, founded and built the Lemoenland Educare centre back in 2001. We could see that farm workers’ children of pre-school age did not have the same opportunities as children from more privileged backgrounds. This lack of educational stimulus meant that they were less well-prepared for formal schooling at seven years old.The parents of the children attending the school are all farm workers on farms along the Canal road. Currently we have 48 children attending the pre-school with two trained teachers and one teacher’s assistant. "The children adore coming to school. Since we began, we’ve seen the kids really develop in confidence, and in both fine and gross motor co-ordination. Most have no toys in their homes, so they love doing the puzzles and the train set is a big favourite. We pay special attention to the 5 and 6 year olds so that they’re able to cope when they go to school in January." Henriette, schoolteacher. |
